On Wednesday evening  24th June, we came together with our communities, the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and community leaders to celebrate Eid Al-Adha.

The event was organised by Derbyshire Association of Muslim Police (AMP) in conjunction with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, and took place at Pride Park Stadium. It featured talks, prayers, and cultural food that complimented the evening.

The opening prayer was conducted by Shaykh Burhaan Khandia, who blessed the coming together of the many organisations in the room, blessing everyone attending and extending his thanks.

Amraez Ashraf was then welcomed to the stage to perform a graceful Islamic recitation, followed by welcome greetings from Derbyshire Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Michelle Shooter, and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service Area Manager Clive Stanbrook.

Within both the police and fire services we have associations to support those from Muslim faith, ensuring they have the policy and support in place to be able to practice their religion without obstacle. We heard from these respective associations and listened to what progress they’ve been making during the previous years.

The progress being made to represent our communities within both the police and fire services has improved, however events like this recognise there is still work to be done, and it is only through partnership working that we can continue to create organisations that are more inclusive and representative of the communities we serve.

To conclude the presentations, we heard from two community speakers who shared their experiences from within the Muslim community, and the challenges they often face. We shared in the hope of stronger relationships going forwards and the continuation of events such as this which bring together all parties within our communities.

A feast was welcomed, with traditional halal food being shared along with plenty of conversation and laughter.

ACC Michelle Shooter added, “Wednesday evenings’ event was a fantastic example of a community coming together and celebrating both history and a brighter future still to come.

“I would like to thank all the people who played a part in organising the first of these events, and the members of the community who attended and spoke to us about their experiences.
